Positive Behaviour Support ~~~
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an approach used to understand and address challenging behaviours in individuals, with a focus on increasing quality of life. Proactive strategies, positive reinforcement and function-based approaches are the pillars of our work with the individuals we serve.
What is PBS?
Key elements
-
PBS is all about personalization, considering what makes the individual unique – their needs, preferences, and strengths.
-
The approach emphasizes identifying and building on the person’s strengths rather than focusing solely on deficits or challenges.
-
PBS is proactive, meaning we identify and deal with potential issues before they become problematic.
-
Collaboration is key. We work together with you, your family, friends, and professionals to make positive changes.
-
PBS relies on data collection and analysis to guide the interventions we choose – no guesswork involved.
-
We are not just about fixing problems. We aim to teach new skills and behaviours that can make a real difference in the individual’s life
-
Positive Behaviour Support can be applied in various settings, including homes, schools, and community settings. It is widely applicable in the field of education and autism spectrum disorders. The ultimate goal is to create environments that promote the person’s well-being, independence, success and overall life satisfaction.
Applied Behaviour Analysis

Applied Behaviour Analysis ~~~
What is ABA?
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) constitutes a specialized domain within the scientific realm of Behaviour Analysis and serves as the foundation of Positive Behaviour Support. Recognized as the foremost evidence-based approach for Early Intensive Intervention, ABA boasts over five decades of global research supporting its effectiveness. Through scientific evidence, it is demonstrated that ABA leads to substantial and holistic improvements in the well-being of children, enhancing their educational journey, fostering greater independence, and nurturing cognitive skills. The overarching aim of ABA is to utilize precise behavioural, instructional, and learning principles—such as reinforcement, prompting, and shaping—to develop socially significant skills. These skills not only contribute to a meaningful transformation in the learning trajectory but also facilitate the acquisition of valuable abilities for learners with complex needs.
Key elements
-
Understanding the Scene
We dive into supporting our learners with a comprehensive behavioural assessment. We kick things off by identifying the specific behaviour that needs attention. This process includes defining the behaviour in clear, observable terms and figuring out its function or purpose.
-
Is essentially behaviour detective Work. Within our toolkit, Behaviour Analysts have specialized skills aiming to uncover the why behind the behaviour, allowing us to understand the individual better. This involves pinpointing antecedents (what happens before), the behaviour itself, and consequences (what happens after). Identifying the function of behaviour, is our primary goal and the most important element in designing intervention.
-
Taking Action for Positive Change
Once we’ve cracked the code on the behaviour’s function, and identified areas for skill-building, our behaviour analysts get to work. We develop and implement interventions tailored to bring about positive behaviour change. These interventions are based on proactive strategies and reinforcement contingencies as well as skill building.
-
Boosting the Good Stuff In the world of ABA, reinforcement takes centre stage. It’s all about providing consequences that make a behaviour more likely to happen again. Whether it’s adding something awesome (positive reinforcement) or removing something not-so-great (negative reinforcement), we’re all about boosting the good stuff.
